"Data" covers at least three distinct jobs with three distinct credential markets, and most confusion in this category comes from treating them as one. Data analysis is about querying and communicating. Data engineering is software engineering applied to pipelines. Business intelligence sits between them, closer to a specific vendor's tooling than either.
The certifications sort cleanly along those lines once you know the lines exist. What they cannot do is tell you which of the three you want — that is a question about whether you would rather build systems or answer questions, and it is worth settling before spending anything.
This category also has unusually strong free options, which makes it one of the few where the honest first recommendation costs nothing.
Worth your time if
- Analysts formalising skills learned on the job, particularly SQL and a BI platform.
- Software engineers moving toward data engineering, where the pipeline and warehouse concepts are genuinely new material.
- Career changers, for whom this is one of the more certification-receptive fields — the work is demonstrable and the tools are learnable.
Probably not for you if
- Anyone who has not yet decided between analysis and engineering. The tracks diverge quickly and the credentials do not transfer well.
- Analysts who already work in the field daily. Your existing dashboards and queries carry more weight than a tool certificate.
- Anyone expecting a certification to substitute for SQL fluency, which every one of these assumes rather than teaches.

The ladder narrows to almost nothing at the top. Beyond associate level this field stops certifying and starts asking what you have built — a warehouse that holds, a pipeline that recovers, a model somebody trusted enough to ship.

Common questions
- What is the difference between data analyst and data engineer certifications?
- Analyst credentials test querying, statistics and communicating findings, usually through a BI tool. Engineer credentials test pipeline construction, warehousing and distributed processing — much closer to software engineering. They do not substitute for each other.
- Are free data certifications worth taking?
- In this category, genuinely yes. Several major vendors offer free credentials covering real fundamentals, which makes data one of the few fields where the sensible first step costs nothing.
- Do I need to know SQL first?
- Yes. Effectively every certification here assumes working SQL and tests things built on top of it. Learn SQL before booking anything.
